Phil Roberts Obituary: Wildcats Football Coach Dies After Battle With ALS, Leaving Lasting Legacy in Ottawa, Canada

Phil Roberts, a respected football coach and mentor who dedicated more than three decades to developing athletes, has died following a brief battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His passing has left the Wildcats Football community mourning a coach whose leadership, knowledge, and commitment to student-athletes made a lasting impact on the program.

Roberts served as the U18 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) defensive coordinator for Wildcats Football for the past five years. During that time, his leadership helped strengthen the program and establish its reputation within Ontario football. The organization remembered him as an influential figure whose defensive units were consistently tough, disciplined, and fundamentally sound.

Before joining Wildcats Football, Roberts spent more than 30 years coaching at the university level. His experience and understanding of the game made him a valuable addition to the Wildcats organization, which expressed gratitude that he chose to spend the final five years of his coaching career with the team.

However, Roberts’ influence extended well beyond football strategies and results. According to the team’s tribute, he was deeply committed to helping student-athletes succeed in every aspect of their lives. He regularly took time to discuss players’ academic performance, career ambitions, educational goals, and future opportunities.

That commitment reflected his belief in developing young people beyond the playing field. He understood that athletes needed guidance and encouragement as they prepared for life after football, and he was willing to invest his time in helping them find their direction.

Roberts also supported younger coaches, mentoring them as they developed their own coaching abilities and careers. His willingness to share his experience helped strengthen the coaching community and created a legacy that will continue through the people he taught and encouraged.

The Wildcats Football community described Phil as someone everyone loved and emphasized how deeply he would be missed. As players, fellow coaches, and colleagues remember his contribution, his influence will remain part of the program’s story.
